Don't know if you know or not, but Oxytocin is actually also the hormone that causes the uterus to contract, and is absolutely instrumental in a natural birth. Adrenaline also counteracts and prevents the release of Oxytocin.

It's probably strongly related to mothering/parenting which would also explain why it increases the ability to discern what someone else wants/needs simply based on eye-cues. Especially useful in raising children (at least until they are able to communicate) no?
